Advanced print technique for Bassetts

The excellence of DS Smith Packaging’s Clay Cross print on a Cadbury Trebor Bassetts Allsorts pack was recognised by judges in the 2009 EFTA print competition with a gold award.
The pack was flexographically printed in five colours using Optima recycled white liner supplied by St Regis Paper Company.
The print is stepped 3 round the print cylinder using a 1350 mm repeat and also stepped 3 across the paper web using a 2.1 metre paper width.
The images are printed by using 55 lines per inch within large solid areas of background print that require high quality repro and exact press control.
It was important to ensure full solid print coverage on the background areas of the pack together with fine dot control to achieve the best quality image reproduction at 55 lines per inch. There are lots of ‘white out’ text areas which also needed careful control to obtain the cleanest possible image.
Becky Tompkins, DS Smith Packaging’s Marketing Manager, said: “The whole project showed the level of outstanding print quality that can be achieved on recycled paper. We are delighted to have won this gold award as it symbolises the way we are helping customers by pushing back the boundaries on flexographic printing. We recognise that colour management is a key contributing factor to brand appeal.”
